Our Philosophy

Our philosophy is underpinned by four principles.

Principle 1. Kaitiakitanga

kaitiaki is a guardian. Offering kaitiakitangi is providing guardianship and stewardship to basketball for Aotearoa and in our Kapiti community. KBA as an association is the guardian and steward of basketball in the Kapiti region.

Principle 2. Whanaungatanga

Whanaungatanga is about building & maintaining relationships. These relationships create a sense of belonging, obligation, support, responsibilities and roles.

Principle 3 Kotahitanga

Kotahitanga is the concept of togetherness. It is a call for unity in the basketball community, cooperation and alignment towards our common goal and vision.

Principle 4 Manaakitanga

Manaakitanga acknowledges the mana of others as having equal or greater importance than our own, through the expression of aroha, hospitality, generosity and mutual respect.

In applying these principles we aim to develop not only great basketball players but individuals with character who demonstrate the very best of sportsmanship, appreciation and promotion of our club through exemplary behaviour.

We will ask the following from our Players

·  Be a teammate who asks what can I give, not what can I get

·  Be grateful to coaches who ask and push you to go the extra mile

·  Hold yourself to a higher standard

·  Prepare and compete at your very best

·  Realise that you only get out what you put in

·  When things go wrong, do not blame others but instead ask “what can I learn from this?”

We ask the following of our Coaches

·  Keep being positive role models and mentors to our players

·  Respect and encourage your players

·  Earn the trust of both players and parents

·  Keep asking more of your players than they ask of themselves

·  Be clear and consistent in your communication

·  Have standards not rules

·  Be the coach you always wished you had

·  Leave referees alone, they have a coach too and are striving to get better, treat them like you would your Grandparents, and be mindful that they too are someones son or daughter who is in attendance also.

We will ask the following of our Parents

·  Step back, release your kids and let them own the experience

·  Just be a parent fan, and not the parent who coaches from the stand. You have no idea what the coach has asked your child to do and this merely confuses matters

·  Let the ride home belong to your kids and allow them to dictate the conversation. Research shows this is the #1 ‘dislike’ for youth in sport.

·  Allow coaches to hold your kids accountable for their actions at practice and in games

·  Respect the coaches that show Respect and Care for your kids, even if it makes your kids uncomfortable being held accountable.

·  Help to create a safe to fail environment

·  See your kids and simply love watching them play
