ABOUT KAPITI BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

The aim of KBA is to make Basketball the sport of choice in the Kapiti region. A region that spans from Paekakariki in the south through to Otaki in the north. KBA is aligned to Basketball New Zealand and Capital Zone Basketball Trust strategic plan and has adopted their five critical success factors:

  1. Leadership – Effective leadership and governance, including fiscal management
  2. Quality Programmes – Quality and range of development programmes for players, coaches and match officials
  3. Capability – Effective local management
  4. High Performance Development – Establish and maintain youth access and specific high performance programmes
  5. Participation – Grow kids and adults playing and officiating participation

KBA is a charitable trust and embraces the volunteer model, and advocates for a strong community involvement in both the Governance and Management of Basketball in the Kapiti region. KBA is committed to putting the athlete experience at the center of everything we do and have adopted the international acclaimed Long Term Athlete Development program. Throughout the year in each term KBA will run youth development programs for primary age children from years 4- 8. The primary purpose of these programs is to provide an opportunity for all primary school age athletes to develop skills in a fun environment that have been devised by professional coaches. The philosophy will be to enable participation by all irrespective of ability. Additionally the programs and leagues are an opportunity to develop referees, coaches and score bench officials. This activity will carried out in partnership with MBA and CZBT. KBA will also seek out opportunities to participate with the BBNZ Kiwi Hoops in Primary Schools to encourage increased participation in the sport. Female centric programs will also be developed as a priority.

The aim is to create a youth centric basketball program in the Kapiti region to increase both sport participation rates and healthy development of the area’s youth. In addition, KBA’s has a strong focus on increasing youth access to representative basketball both at a regional and national level. KBA has forged a number of strong partnership including Matts Basketball Academy, Raukawa Basketball Club, and the Capital Zone Basketball Trust. The Kapiti Special Olympics is an affiliated and important member of KBA.
